European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
