Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
