The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
