The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
